I learned that he was a great experimenter and his orchestrations are samples of high craftsmanship that exploit at a large degree the possibilities of an orchestral apparatus.

The appeal of Tzigane or the piano concertos is undeniable. Yet, a sort of coldness arises in my mind when it comes to Ravel. I regard him as theoretic and arid a composer, whose skills are supremely featured, but whose feelings are almost absent from what he composes. Therefore, when ordering this recording my curiosity was mainly elicited by Krystian Zimerman. The restrained manner in which Zimerman proceeds makes the interpretation plausible and quite interesting, the dialogue with the orchestra natural and properly meaningful.

A colleague of generation with Zimerman, French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard with the same conductor and precisely the same American orchestra delivers a more resolute version of both concertos. He keeps though a distance and seems to plane over the text with an ironic smile, while giving relief to the minutest detail.

Technically, both pianists 2. Satz: Adagio Assai - Maurice Ravel - Klavierkonzerte G-dur · D-dur (Vinyl above are beyond any comment. Musically, each of them finds a personal way to Ravel. Jorge Top Contributor: Classical Music. Ravel undertook an American tour in where he met with Gershwin and many more celebrities. Upon returning home to France he composed and crowned his international fame with Bolero, the Piano Concerto for the Left Hand and the Piano Concerto in G, among his last LP). During his American tour there was a well known picture taken on his 53rd birthday with Gershwin and others wherein Ravel is at the piano playing Rhapsody in Blue.

There are some melodies in these later works that reveal musical impressions from this tour. Coincidentally both Ravel and Gershwin died in the same year, both from brain related illnesses, though Ravel was almost thirty years older. Gershwin had made multiple trips to Europe from to and is said to have impressed Ravel, Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Schoenberg with his abilities at the piano. By the end of the First World War in NovemberDebussy was dead and Ravel assumed the mantle of the greatest living French composer.

Many of Ravel's works originally composed for piano were later very successfully orchestrated. His piano piece, Jeux d'eau, was considered a masterpiece of musical impressionism comparable to anything that had been written by the older Debussy. Boulez's way with his Ravel albums is ravishing, IMO. These pieces are superbly played and recorded, and I can find no criticism of Boulez and the way he shapes them. 2. And yes, of course I know what I don't like, too. I'm okay with Boulez and Mahler but his performances are just not up to the greats there. But his three Ravel albums are superb and for Ravel lovers must-haves. I do love many other performances of these works for a whole slew of reasons, but I return to these quite regularly. The three Ravel albums are wonderful. Of all the Ravel concertos recordings i've heard; in my opinion, this is the best! Zimmerman, Boulez and the Cleveland Orchestra were at their top form when this recording was made.

Buy and listen for yourself, especially the second movement of the first concerto on the recording beautiful. I'm sure that many of you will agree with me. Well worth the cost! I've heard most performances of Ravel's ultra-popular "Piano Concerto in G major. Of course, Boulez is no stranger to Ravel's music as he has recorded much of it for Sony and Deutsche Grammophon, but I think this is one of his finest Ravel recordings next to his reading of "Daphnis et Chloe.

Zimerman is on fire and plays with an emotional intensity whereas Boulez, as usual, provides very controlled, thoughtful accompaniment. The other performances "Valses Nobles et Sentimentales" and "Piano Concerto for the Left-Hand" are given very good readings as well, but the show stopper here is the "Concerto in G.

Probably the best I've heard them since George Szell. They have never sounded so alive. If you're looking for a one-stop collection of Ravel's piano concertos, then this recording is for you, but I urge you to acquire different readings of these concertos as well.

No recording is definitive, but this is about as close as you're ever going to get with these pieces. See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews.

Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. First class in every way. Perfect performances of seldom-heard works, recorded with great sympathy and quality.

Cleveland suona in modo favoloso.

One person found this helpful.
