  1. Overview. With the exception of the Halloween show - Episode 26 - introduced by comedian Steven Wright, all the episodes in Season One were introduced by an uncredited Ellen Barkin who would open with the lines, "It's night (or night time) in the Big City" and then describe a city scene - such as a woman walking in the rain, a shopkeeper closing his doors, angry hookers arguing on a street.
  2. Ella and Basie! is a studio album by Ella Fitzgerald, accompanied by Count Basie and his orchestra, with arrangements by Quincy Jones and Benny Carter. It was later reissued with slightly different cover art as On the Sunny Side of the Street.

Boz Scaggs adds drop-dead gorgeous vocals to Buddy Johnson's "Save Your Love For Me." The entire tune gels evocatively and Zingg swings sweetly here with a sumptuous midway solo that sets up Boz for more tender and emotive vocalizing.
  7. Among the gems of a program that includes two alternate-take bonus tracks and a few evergreen standards are Adderley’s celebratory title tune, the soulful Buddy Johnson ballad “Serves Me Right,” and an amble over “The Sidewalks of New York.” CANNONBALL ADDERLEY—alto saxophone MILT JACKSON—vibes WYNTON KELLY—piano PERCY HEATH—bass.

This CD has the music from Johnson 's last three sessions of and his three dates; the recording strike caused a gap. There were no major soloists in the band, but the musicianship was high, the vocalists (heard along with Buddy Johnson himself on all but four numbers) were excellent and there was plenty of spirit.
