The UK feminist post-hardcore band take a more internally-focused, less straightforward approach on their new LP. Devo and Gary Numan, called 'Freeze'. If you like music by weirdos who record in their room all day, this might be for you. They are told in beautiful, unnerving, specific detail because he is a very good writer, and also some of them are just true stories about his own life. These are the consolations; and if some of his songs suggest that there are real hells on earth, other songs remind that the heavens are equally close at hand.
Sometimes they are even the same songs. It is my impression that this is the ecstasy John Darnielle is feeling: that thrill of having survived, escaped for even a second to enjoy those small transcendent delights, and to sing of them. Transcendental Youth is full of songs about people who madly, stupidly, blessedly won't stop surviving, no matter who gives up on them.
The album was very successful on the Billboard Toppeaking at 5. Ronno's best-selling solo set of '74 has exclusive Bowie songs, a cracking band and engaging ideas. The album is dense with deep, polyrhythmic grooves that refer as much to early '70s underground soul as it does to Ahmed's home country Sudan.
It's a 21st-century party record that swoons with its kinetic catchiness. Vinyl version! Here things are stripped down to the basics with a focus on texture and mood, where powerful vocals are showcased against a cascade of whirling synthesizers, soaring guitars, and thundering drums.

Much like his debut, this sophomore album by Rikki Illilonga delivered an appealing, loose and woozy mixture of folk-rock and garage-rock that could be described as the African answer to the Velvet Underground.
This is an appealing, loose and woozy mixture of folk-rock and garage-rock that could be described as the African answer to the Velvet Underground.
I also did lots of studying around African traditional music and that's where the idea for my album 'African Dialects' came about, the fusion of so many African traditional rhythms," explains Peter King, Nigeria's best known saxophonist and one of the country's finest multi-instrumentalist and composers. Originally released in on Grandstar, African Dialects fuses the African rhythms Peter studied with a healthy dose of funk and jazz to create a potent brew that still resonates deeply with music lovers more than 30 years on.
Written, produced and arranged by King, as with most of his other albums, 'African Dialects' features King on piano, flute, trumpet and saxophone alongside L. Lewis on bass, P. Martins on drums, A. Allen on guitar and F. Wall on trumpet. Together the band delivers one of King's most varied albums, easily switching between funk-inspired afro fusion on the title track and Joy, traditional Nigerian highlife vibes on 'Adura', unusual yet mesmerising takes on reggae with 'Happy Song' and 'Caribbean Air', hints of Latin inspiration on 'Sweet Soulful Congo', and even Calypso on 'Gentleman Joe'.
Despite its breadth of styles 'African Dialects' never feels like it tries too hard, instead letting the musical fusion take the listener on a journey through rhythms like no other. Bongo's 'Classic African Recordings' series. The LP features fully reproduced original artwork. Produced with heavyweight, old style packaging. As King remarked in later life Miliki Sound was his attempt to escape being tied down following a string of albums for the label by delving into his own Afrojazz fusion.
Making little impact in his homeland, the album was particularly well received in America and Europe, increasing King's popularity. As with his other releases from the same period, 'Miliki Sound' was entirely composed, written and arranged by King. Upbeat and funky the album's six tracks feature plenty of impressive displays of King's saxophone skills, the instrument for which he was perhaps best known, alongside a talent for arrangement that plays the funk of the groove against the accompanying instruments and Nigerian chants.
You only need to listen to Jo Jolo, Ijo Olomo or Gyinmi Komo to see why King's Afrojazz approach, a blend of modern jazz with highlife as the basis, has proven so popular and continues to endure for over three decades. Bongo' s Classic African Recordings series. Produced on heavyweight, oldstyle packaging, the same as the original LP. Original label art. Originally released on Sonny Roberts' Orbitone label inthe album was one of King's two 'Afrojazz' releases for the label. It still sounds captivating more than 30 years later.
The album opens with the title track, where King displays his mastery of the saxophone over a solid groove, crafting a mesmerising song with catchy chants. On Yere Africa King's combination of sax, organ and flute proves irresistible, especially on the solo parts. Afro Funk shows off King's ability to fuse Highlife and Afrobeat with the then dominant funk sound of James Brown - just shake it easy and shake it loose.
Eda's chants grip you from the off as the Nigerian maestro rolls out a slower groove and languorous sax melodies that play off against the chants and keys. On Ajo he injects yet more funk into the mix, with infectious rhythmic breakdowns. Congo captures the happiness of King's unique fusion with its combination of saxophone, organs, flutes and chants showing King's talent for melodic articulation.
The album closes with the funk of Ko Dara, a relentless number with a driving bassline, guitars, flutes and irresistible percussive breakdowns. Omo Lewa is part of a series of Peter King reissues on Mr. Originally recorded in in a Camden studio session funded by money from a TV soundtrack recorded by King a few years earlier, it remained unreleased for close to 30 years despite King releasing five albums in the years that followed, the band touring America, Europe and Japan and King establishing himself in the West as one of Nigeria's finest multiinstrumentalist.

Together they fused funk, jazz and afrobeat and added hard-hitting vocal messages including calls for freedom in Africa - album closer Watusi is about the struggle for freedom and democracy in Angola during the s - and references to African history and the Yoruba religion.
Shango is the foremost Yoruba deity, god of thunder and storms, and on this album his energy is clearly channelled into the horn lines and devastating grooves found throughout the eight tracks. Having stood the test of time for close to 40 years, 'Shango' is a lost classic and one of King's finest, most refined works. The LP features fully reproduced original artwork and heavyweight gram vinyl. Written, produced and arranged by King, as with most of his other albums, African Dialects features King on piano, flute, trumpet and saxophone alongside L.

Though she's been making music for quite a few years, its only the past 3 years that her work got some broader attention within the underground.

The second song is an instrumental -to her standards- popsong. These two tracks proved nearly impossible to split over two sides of a ten inch. Adding more tracks could have damaged the coherence of the EP. So we went for a one-sided 12". Tony Conrad meets Canned Heat.
Side B goes into experimental territory. Tracks: Live side: Cold Soup. With music like this, there seems to be an obvious marriage between composition and improvisation, where the composer creates a set of moments, or rules, or an environment within which each musician is free to fill spaces accordingly. This group does this masterfully, which is to be expected.
Alongside longtime favorites, like Kai Fagaschinski clarinetWerner Dafeldecker double bassand Paul Wirkus percussionare revelations, like Eva Reiter viola di gamba, subcontrabass recorder and Bjorn Gottstein viola. Todosch's performance on voice, especially, is flooring. Whatever Ehlers set in front of each of these musicians, each brought ample personality and a mastery of their moment. Adikia has twin structures, at least initially.
Each moment leads to the next, free of signposts but pregnant with a growing sense of unified direction, of pattern. Imagine, if you will, a slow motion film in reverse, which starts with a shattered window, the spider webs stretching from side to side, small, jagged holes in the glass. From this brief still comes motion This is how sound works in Ehlers' work. These pieces don't build so much as reconstitute themselves.
Each half of this piece ends where it began. There is no slow scaling, there is no ascent. There is only retracing steps, a move towards an indentation in the ground from which someone, or something, lifted off, only LP) suddenly scatter.
It never sounds like this idiom is coming from the reggae tradition in Jamaica, but even if we leave aside the style considerations, it's the essence of Dub itself that we find here in all its transformative power. Hegenbart used the recordings of 19 invited musicians and sound artists from several tendencies of the present creative scene improvisers, electronicists and exploratory instrumentalistsand the results are not simply a remix or a processing of the material. He dissects everything in detail and brings the more obscure components to the foreground, like in a zooming operation.
Blumm, Boris Hauf and Ulrich Krieger. The CD version of this album comes out on Monotype Records. Limited edition of copies, comes in silkscreened cover. Pepijn Caudron's soiled, wall-crawling ambience has been widely acclaimed in recent years, and while he only has two albums out in the world, each one has pushed his sound to deeper, grimier places. These records are not the complete story, however - Caudron has been composing similarly stifling long-form drones for many years in his capacity as a member of the renowned theatre troupe Abattoir Ferm, and 'Works For Abattoir Ferm ' collects this material over four jam-packed LP's and bundles in a inch of music composed for the TV show 'Monster' as the icing on the cake.
On top of the reams of unreleased material we're treated to full, unedited versions of a handful of tracks included on Caudron's earlier LP's and it's a rare pleasure to hear them presented in their original, intended context. This is some of the most epic and evocative dark ambient music this side of Deathprod, and Caudron finally has the space he deserves to show his musical scope and reach.
The theatrical reference point is appropriate, but Caudron's scores are never tempted by the vaudeville, rather they evoke a similar mood that Alan R.
There is a sense of widescreen without any of the usual tropes, and this is simply a testament to Caudron's veteran's touch.
Each extended side is crafted from an arsenal of samples, disintegrating vinyl and corroded tape, and Caudron manipulates these sounds in a way that belies the sources. Rather than allow the sounds to emerge, they stay trapped beneath swathes of noise, tape delay and oppressive bass giving us a compositions that emerge like a cross between William Basinski, Jerry Goldsmith circa Alien and Thomas Koner.
Apart from releasing a few albums under his own name, his work under the moniker Lichens is probably best known. Under this name, he make a mix of focused and sparse drones using guitars, synths and his unique voice. His most notable releases have been two critically acclaimed albums on the Kranky label. That these didn't go by unnoticed resulted in a long list of artists collaborating with Lowe.
Lowe takes tumbling electrified rhythms and sets them up against slowly modulating analogue patterns, gradually building into something even more revenant. Bass-heavy and precariously stripped bare, leaving only skeletons of influence and form. The mixdown portrays the current state of affairs in composed noise: filtered gritty sound blocks flow and float with no seeming direction when sudden breaks puncture the structure and create something like a melody.
Well, almost. The music is accompanied by a text insert that documents a skype conversation between the two artists discussion the methods and aesthetics connected to this release and their ways of working in general. Clear vinyl, with insert, numbered edition of copies. Cut direct to metal and pressed on gram virgin vinyl. Standing on top of the transducer, Pollard was holding the MiniDisc recorder in his hand, monitoring the feed with a pair of in-ear earphones.
His younger brother was on the shore throwing firecrackers into the water. Two and a half hours in total. Recorded live over two nights, March 14 and 15, inat New York City's legendary performance space The Kitchen, 'Singing In Unison' is a dramatic yet meditative work: modal improvisations for three male voices, singing, with great gravitas, in purposeful unison. These previously unreleased recordings, featuring vocalists Richard Hayman, Imani Smith and Wada himself are extremely powerful, with a glacial majesty and a sense of timeless wonder.
Wada's earliest musical memories are of hearing Zen Buddhist ritual chants in his native Japan, and those memories are reflected in the deep vocalisations here; also evident is Wada's period of intense study with Indian LP) singer Pandit Pran Nath.
Thus there is a definite "Eastern" feeling to 'Singing In Unison', with further elements added by Imani Smith's Sufi background and Wada's interest in Eastern European vocal styles, but the music is also informed by Wada's experiences in the Fluxus movement and as a member of the New York avant-garde community.
The edgy atmosphere of s New York City pervades these recordings, adding a hint of menace. Despite the fact that this is purely vocal music, fans of the slow-moving heaviosity of Sunn 0 will appreciate 'Singing In Unison'.
In fact, it's really strange. Kim Gordon once painted a picture of it because she liked the name. Its sole protagonist Robin Dickinson hit a creative rupture after a couple of years, a dead end that pushed him into incorporating "composition, concrete, field recordings and whatever the hell it takes to sound "interesting to himself". What remains is a dead-star galaxy away from your standard dark ambient hoopla. This is a portal into a mirror-image world where only vague barely recognisable traces of life remain.
These performances by Lore Lixenberg, Gregory Rose, and Robert Worby are a stunning achievement, and this first complete recording makes a welcome and long overdue addition to the ever-expanding catalogue of Cage's recorded works. This year,John Cage would have been years old.
He defined experimental music in the s and, since that time, his ideas, his music and his work have been copied by hundreds of other composers and musicians time and time and time again. Anybody who claims to make experimental music today has to acknowledge their debt to him.
As a theme, he took a line from his diaries: 'We connect Satie with Thoreau'. Satie being the eccentric French composer Erik Satie, whom Cage greatly admired. And Thoreau, the American writer who lived alone in the woods, writing about nature and his own type of anarchy. Any number of the Solos may be performed by any number of people, in any order, selected by chance operations. Songs and theatre and electronics mash up Fluxus-like food events, amplified board games, electroacoustic voices, 'animal heads' and intense feedback.
Cage says that "a virtuoso performance will include a wide variety of styles of singing and vocal production. A true witch's stew where everything is of the moment. Recorded live and direct from the Ghost Time. The lineup is unusual too. As a group they allude to traces of greatly diverse influences and traditions.
Bass lines are drawn from the Ceol Mor - the ancient tradition of Scottish Pibroch. Ken's vocals use elements of Canntaireachd, a vocalisation of bagpipe playing, as well as Khoomei, a Siberian form of overtone singing he learned in Tuva. Z'EV uses alto and baritone rolmos - Tibetan ritual cymbals which generate a rich range of overtones - and Ken uses tenor rolmos. As you listen, you might get a feeling of something you felt before. A hint of music you might have caught on the wind, off the water, in your sleep, or in someone's eyes.
Every faint glimpse lingers awhile before it slips away. Initially conceived as series of studies on panning and phasing, the work ended to incorporate parts of two other series, all realised in Bologna between November and March The cover includes some of Maggiore's drawings from the same period.
Luciano Maggiore lives and works in Bologna, and this is his first solo cd. Numbered edition of copies. Multi-layered syncopatic polyrhythms alternate with gong-based drones, both built on top of computer-generated loops and pulsating patterns. Melting acoustic with electronic aesthetics in a unique way, the trio explores strategies for a highly hypnotic, cathartic sonic experience. PRSZR formed in and played a few promising live shows since. Equilirium is their first album release.
Every piece was recorded in realtime, during a residency at Hotel Pupik, Schrattenberg, in Julyallowing the sounds from the surroundings to interfere with the electrically-induced resonances of the piano.
Mixed and mastered with Giuseppe Ielasi, a longtime collaborator the two operate the Bellows project. Thus there is a definite "Eastern" feeling to "Singing in Unison", with further elements added by Imani Smith's Sufi background and Wada's interest in Eastern European vocal styles, but the music is also informed by Wada's experiences in the Fluxus movement and as a member of the New York avant-garde community.
Scanone, and a mighty interesting multi-platform digital release of previously unissued tracks and footage. A range of decorated international directors and animators provide a lush visual canopy for Greenaway's soundscapes, concluding five years of work and unveiling a rich library of previously unreleased treasures. The short films and visual works lean towards digital abstraction, creating worlds where the elemental play of structure, light, and form compete for the leading role.
Collaborations with artists like Jasmin Jondry and Stuart Sinclair contrast in style to the experimental approaches of directors Inside Us All and Yongsub. All in all, Greenaway's audio works have inspired a diversity of aesthetics which span the 60 minute compilation, all combined to form a consistent, modern soundtrack with museum-calibre images; a must-see for the audiophile, VJ and art collector alike.
The DVD also holds a promo code allowing users to download an HD version of the disc and an app version of the album which streams updated films and contents as the Archive library expands with guest remixes, footage from the release event and interviews being added after the release date. Masami Akita assaults our ears once again with a new double CD. The two CD's of 'Kibako' span from extended and powerful harsh noise pieces to ambient and tribal offerings.
Once again Merzbow is able to surprise us, this time with tribal wooden instruments, violent analogue synths and ambient soundscapes. The music of 'Kibako' represents a vision of sound and concepts presented in a way only the mind of a world class master of noise could deliver. The two discs come in beautiful card stock packaging. Evocative in sound and yet isolationist in sentiment, the album is an intense, dramatic and emotive study of loss and modern anxiety set to a strained electronic soundtrack.
Howard's centrepiece tenor voice and his glitchy, scattered rhythms present Thom Yorke's 'The Eraser' as an easy reference point, alongside other exponents of recent mutations in London's unique urban sound narrative such as The XX, Burial or Mount Kimbie.
It's a statuesque introspection on an unfathomable modern world. Subdued, heartbroken and drug-hazed, this is perhaps one of the most satisfying iterations of the Tri Angle aesthetic yet. Rare early Kraftwerk, now for the first time on double vinyl LP! What do you need to survive a zombie apocalypse? If you're thinking ammunition and a safe place in which to hold up you might be wrong. The most essential thing you'll need is the ability to run, and run fast. Sort of like a horse. Not sure? Let Horseman convince you otherwise with 'Horsemove', the first single from his forthcoming album for Mr. Bongo, 'Dawn Of The Dread'. Originally inspired by a horse race, 'Horsemove' was written in and released under the title 'Giddiup'.
It proved a successful hit back then, spending four weeks at the top of the British reggae charts. This new version comes backed with production from Horseman acolyte Prince Fatty who updates the riddim for with a solid, bouncing bassline and a rejuvenated drum track.
Horseman proves his lyrical dexterity with quick fire chats and invigorating chants turning the track into a dancefloor race starter and thus living up to his name - earned after chasing girls like a horse, apparently.
